Thoughts on Where Will We Go From Here from Hardline

Where Will We Go From Here is a hard rock song performed by Hardline for their 2016 album, Human Nature. Supposedly, the message in the song itself is that Earth is in danger of being destroyed and the humans need to find a way to take better care of the planet.

I’m just going to come out and say it. The music is catchy, and the melody and lyrics are good, but if you put them all together, this song doesn’t even sound like a Mother Earth song. It sounds like more of a song that fits for a video game, or a loose English translation for an anime opening theme.

I mean, Michael Jackson’s Earth song was about, you know, Earth but at least it is a song that I (and some people) can take seriously, because it asks us questions about the only planet that is filled with life. What have we done to our world and what can we do to change our ways, so that we can try to restore it?

For the many people who don’t seem to give a care about OUR world, the Earth song asks them these questions to make them realise that they are doing damage to the Earth, in hope that they can and will change their ways to help repair and restore the planet, and give hope to its people. Plus, it’s a much better song in comparison to Hardline’s Where Will We Go From Here.

Speaking of the Hardline song, everything about it – in my eyes (or in this case, ears) – gives off an ‘anime’ feel, instead of a ‘Mother Earth’ feel. When I first heard this song, I didn’t know what to think of it (except that it probably would have fit as a Sonic Underground song). When I heard it a couple more times though, I thought that it had something to do with a historical expedition or the events of war (during and after). But as it turns out, according to Johnny Gioeli, it’s a Mother Earth song. I would like to know who wrote the lyrics and who wrote the music for this song.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Johnny wanted the music to have more drama so that people would take the song more seriously but Hardline decided to go for a... happier approach. I like his vocals, and I appreciate that the fact that Hardline is doing this for the sake of the planet, but I just cannot take this song seriously. Some people may like this, whereas others may not like it as much as they had hoped. I’m good with the lyrics but I believe that this song would have been better if the music and the melody had a sad yet serious tone to the message.

I also have to talk about the video. When I first watched the video, I didn't know what to expect. Then, out of nowhere, short clips of crane-shaped earth diggers and cars, some stock footage, still images of natural disasters and binary numbers showed up. At first glance, you would think, "What does all this have to do with a song telling us about the events of war or a historical expedition"? But again, it turned out to be a Mother Earth song and the images were meant to represent the damage we humans have done to the world. Michael Jackson's Earth Song had some stock footage and still images, but... let's just say that its way of showing us those things was more convincing of the damage done to the planet.

The only difference between the two Mother Earth music videos is that Where Will We Go From Here is less graphic than Earth Song. And Earth Song had a tragic yet serious feel to it. I have to wonder, was Hardline trying to make people hope that they can change their ways for the good of the planet when this song was written? If so, then maybe this wasn't exactly the best way to portray the song. Don't get me wrong, Where Will We Go From Here is pretty catchy, to say the least. It just doesn't come off as a Mother Earth song, in my opinion. And as for the music video, they probably should have a little more thought into it.
