Teen Titans Go: Black Friday

Hey, guys. Today, I’m going to be reviewing an episode from a different cartoon: Teens Titans Go. Apparently, it’s supposed to be a lighter, more cheerful reboot of the original Teen Titans. The episode I’m going to be reviewing is Black Friday. It’s… abysmal. It’s meant to be a parody of A Christmas Carol starring Ebenezer Scrooge. Just to warn you, this review contains spoilers. So you might need to watch the episode first before reading what I am about to say. Anyway, we have got a lot of dirt to shovel through. So, let’s go.

The episode starts off with Robin giving a speech during Thanksgiving (I assume), everyone is smiling happily during this… and then they scoff down their food like there’s no tomorrow. Starfire, seeing this, tells them to slow down, but Robin says ‘no’ as he and friends are in a rush to celebrate Black Friday.

Starfire knows of this, and is rightfully and understandably upset. The other Titans try to convince her that Black Friday is the most important holiday of the year. I’m beginning to wonder if the kids would really believe this. Black Friday is not – repeat, NOT – a traditional holiday. People in huge crowds rush into shops and would attack anyone who tries to get the presents they want. Some people end up getting injured or killed in the stampede.

Back to the episode, Starfire leaves the dining table and goes off to bed. I’m going to spare you guys the pain. Starfire comes across the Ghost of Black Friday Past (Robin), who tells her of her ‘past mistakes’ during last year’s Black Friday event. Starfire goes off to her join friends outside the shopping mall (but not to join in on the Black Friday nonsense), only for her to be shunned and forced to go to the back of the line. Then she visits the Ghosts – not Ghost – of Black Friday Present (Cyborg and Beastboy), and they bring her into the shopping mall, amidst the chaos.

Someone knocks her out, and she sees the Ghost of Black Friday Future (Raven) who tells her that her friends (and probably the world) have crumbled. Starfire vows to change, wakes up from her nightmare (in the shopping mall), and is ‘reborn’. She helps her friends get all the presents they want, and they all live happily ever after.

I have said it once and I’ll say it again. This episode is abysmal. It feels as if this episode is trying to brainwash the kids (and possibly the fans of the show) into thinking that Black Friday is the best thing ever. This episode could have just had Starfire wanting to celebrate Black Friday (believing it to be a traditional holiday, like Christmas and Thanksgiving). The other Teen Titans would object to the idea and each of them would tell her about the events of Black Friday (people fighting senselessly over items - big or small - and getting hurt or killed in the stampede).

Starfire ignores the Titans and goes anyway, to celebrate Black Friday. As soon as it starts, Starfire slowly realises that her friends were right all along, and just as Starfire thought her days of being a superhero are over, the Teens Titans come to the rescue. Having escaped the chaos, they scold Starfire and she apologises and vows never to do anything like that again.

Just an idea, for the viewers to understand that Starfire still has a lot to learn about Earth.

Well, folks. That’s my review for this Black Friday episode. If you like it, that's fine. If not, that's fine too.

Until next time, thanks for reading and take care.
